The important truth is this: pregnancy is absolutely possible for LGBTQ+ people. Many choose to grow their families in ways that reflect who they are, and there are multiple supportive and affirming options available.
While getting pregnant through sex may not be an option for some, there are several meaningful and accessible routes to becoming a parent. Here are some of the most common pathways we have experienced with our LGBTQ+ clients:
-
Donor Insemination - using sperm from a known or anonymous donor, conception can be achieved at home or in a clinical setting, depending on your preferences and medical needs.
-
IUI (Intrauterine Insemination) - this fertility treatment involves placing donor sperm directly into the uterus during ovulation. It’s a straightforward and widely used method to increase the chances of pregnancy.
-
Surrogacy - for individuals or couples who are not able or do not wish to carry a pregnancy, working with a gestational carrier (surrogate) can be a wonderful option. This path involves medical, legal, and emotional considerations, and can be an incredibly fulfilling way to grow a family.
-
Adoption or Fostering - many LGBTQ+ people choose to build their families through adoption or foster care, offering loving homes to children who need them.
-
Co-Parenting - this option involves raising a child with one or more people, often outside of a romantic relationship. Co-parenting can be a beautiful, intentional approach built on shared values and strong communication.
