What is colostrum, and why do people call it liquid gold?
Your first breast milk: thick, golden, packed with antibodies. Made from around 16 weeks and available to harvest from 37 weeks. It's more like blood than milk, which is rich in white blood cells and immune-boosting properties.
It's baby's immune system activator, so collecting it ahead of time is a great way to support your breastfeeding journey.
Find a sterile colostrum harvesting syringe or a suitable sterilised container. Our Colostrum Harvesting Kit comes with everything you need.
Make a ‘C’ shape with your thumb and fingers around 2-3 cm from the nipple end. Then, use a gentle stroking and squeezing movement.
Make sure to wash your hands before doing this.
After a few attempts, you should start to see colostrum gather at the nipple end, which you can collect in your plastic syringe.
It may only be a tiny amount at first.
Any colostrum collected can be dated, labelled and stored in your freezer so it is ready to give to your baby should they need it after they are born.
