Sam was my community midwife during my first pregnancy. I was absolutely terrified to be pregnant - I’m autistic and haven’t had much luck with health professionals, despite being a nurse myself. I was really worried about who we’d be allocated and if they would understand how my brain works and not judge me.

However, when I first met Sam, she put me right at ease and understood my needs and quirks from the get-go. Sam always made me feel like I was in control, and she always wanted the best for me. She was always honest and kind - she was always incredibly helpful when my autistic brain just needed more time or a different way of explaining things. I could tell she had a lot of time for me and my family, and it was really sad saying goodbye to her.

Not only was she so supportive of our journey into parenthood, but she also helped me embrace my womanhood and be proud of what my body was able to do and still does every day. She is the epitome of what midwives should be and I’m sure she has touched so many lives for the better.
