Winter Baby Skin & Care: A Midwife’s Guide
Winter is a magical time with crisp air, cosy nights, and twinkling lights but it can also be tough on your baby’s delicate skin. As midwives, we see many parents struggle with dry skin, chapped cheeks, and keeping little ones comfortable in colder months. Here’s our guide to help you care for your newborn safely this winter, with a few trusted products to help along the way.
Vernix Caseosa: Baby’s first skincare
You might notice that your newborn is covered in a creamy, white, almost cheesy or waxy substance at birth, this is vernix caseosa, and pound for pound it is worth more than any of the most expensive skincare products on the market, in fact it is invaluable when it comes to newborn skin. Comprising water, proteins, and lipids, vernix acts as a natural barrier, protecting your baby’s delicate skin whilst in the womb and immediately after birth.
Nappy Care 101 Wee, Poo and more
Welcoming your newborn into the world comes with many firsts, and nappies, poos and wees are definitely some of them. As Midwives we are obsessed with your baby’s nappy habits, how often they poo and wee, what colour is their poo and what consistency is it – did you know you can even get apps that monitor them for you! In the early days, your baby’s nappy can tell you a lot about how they’re feeding and adjusting to life outside of the womb. At My Expert Midwife, we’re here to help you understand what’s normal (and what’s not) when it comes to nappy care, poo, and wee.
Embracing the Fourth Trimester: Self Care Essentials for New Parents
The period following the birth of your baby, often referred to as the Fourth Trimester, is a time of immense transition, not just for your baby but for you as a parent too. It introduces both profound joy and deep vulnerability, making self-care more essential than ever.
