How was your recovery from birth?
Magical, it was incredible, I felt like the only person in the world to give birth, 30 mins after delivery I’d had my shower and was tucked up in my own bed. I had fairy lights twinkling, lavender burning. I’d do it all over again a million times. I loved my breastfeeding journey with my son, it was so much easier second time round.
Do you have any advice or helpful hints or tips that we can share with parents to be?
Planning a homebirth – needs planning, I had logistics of arranging childcare for my 2-year-old, we had originally wanted her there but then when I was labouring at 8pm at night I was conscious I didn’t want to disturb her. We had various ‘practice runs’ at setting the pool up, so that my husband knew “the drill”, we still had a hospital bag ready and packed so that – just in case it was there. I was obsessed with nesting and keeping the house immaculate – ridiculous really as I know being a midwife and the fact, I was on a homebirth team for several years that if your midwife can get to you – and have a little bit of space for setting equipment up, then that’s all that’s needed really. I was lucky to get a midwife out whilst in labour that I’d met in pregnancy several times – so she knew what my birth choices were, I wanted a physiological third stage in the pool, breastfeeding, I consented to the vitamin K injection for my baby.
