Let’s be real, early motherhood isn’t always serene.
It’s blood, milk, tears, love, and uncertainty.
It’s cluster feeds at 3 a.m., raw honesty, fierce connection, and fragile confidence.
If you're feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, emotional, elated or all the above you’re not alone. Your feelings? 100% valid. Your body? Incredible. And this? It’s the beginning of something powerful.
We’re midwives, and we’re here to walk beside you. Let’s break it down, day by day.
Day 1: The Birth Bubble
The first 24 hours can feel surreal, like time has slowed down or stopped altogether. You might be floating in what we call the birth bubble, wrapped up in the afterglow, the adrenaline, or the sheer intensity of what just happened.
-
Hormone high: You might feel euphoric, tearful, dazed, or completely in shock. All of it is normal.
-
Skin-to-skin: This is a golden window for bonding. Your baby is wide-eyed, alert, listening, learning. Let them stay close.
-
Sleeplessness: You may feel wired, even though your body is begging for rest. Many parents just stare at their newborns in awe (and disbelief).
-
Bleeding & soreness: Blood loss (called lochia) is normal. So are afterpains, stitches, swelling, and bruising.
-
Learning to feed: Whether breast or bottle, feeding is brand new for both of you. Be patient, it’s a learning curve, not a test.
Let others help. Eat, rest, cry, breathe. You’re not meant to do this solo.
Day 2: The Realities Sink In
This is often the most emotionally intense day. The adrenaline begins to wear off, the hormone shifts begin, and the physical fatigue hits.
-
Cluster feeding: Your baby may feed seemingly nonstop. They’re working hard to bring your milk in; it’s their job right now.
-
Tears (yours or theirs): Hormone levels crash. Baby blues often start on this day. It’s okay to cry, for any reason or none at all.
-
Fatigue hits: Everything may feel heavier today. Try not to judge yourself.
-
Overwhelm is normal: This is one of the hardest emotional days for many new parents. Be kind to yourself.
You are not failing. You are adjusting. And you are doing better than you think.
Day 3: Milk Comes In, Emotions Run Deep
The emotional rollercoaster continues, but now your body is adding more changes to the mix.
-
Engorgement: Your breasts may feel heavy, sore, even hot. Latching might be tricky, and that’s okay. Support can make all the difference.
-
Emotional swings: Laughing one minute, crying the next? Welcome to the hormone ride.
-
You’re learning together: You and your baby are getting to know each other. Trust will grow. Confidence comes with time.
-
Support is vital: Lean on others. Say yes to help. Say no when you need to. You don’t need to please anyone, just care for yourself and your baby.
There’s no one “right” way, just your way. And we’re here to help you find it.
Whether you're leaking, healing, weeping, thriving, or just getting through the day this space is for you. Motherhood begins in the raw, tender, unfiltered moments. It’s a wild initiation, but you don’t have to walk it alone. Whatever you’re feeling, it matters. You matter.
We’re here. Always.
With love, Your Midwives
