lesley's tip lesley's tip

A baby’s skin needs gentle and careful care as their skin flora and microbiome, formed of trillions of microbes, need to develop from birth to help support their immune system to fight off infections.

As midwives we recommend bathing newborns infrequently because their skin flora and microbiome (which help their skin and bodies develop resistance when transitioning from growing inside the womb to living in the outside world) needs to develop and regular bathing, especially with heavily fragranced products can cause disruption to its development. However, we do appreciate that in those early days and weeks a bath may be the only solution to a poo explosion or sick up after feeding. You can support your baby’s skin by using gentle products, without fragrance and plenty of skin-to-skin contact to populate your baby’s skin flora and help develop their microbiome, which in turn helps them to develop a more robust immune system.

Yes, not only are they dermatologically tested, and paediatrician approved they are also suitable for sensitive and eczema prone skin.
What is skin-to-skin?
Skin-to-skin contact is when your skin and your baby’s skin are in direct contact. Skin-to-skin contact benefits both you and your baby, not just following the birth, but for weeks and months afterwards by: • Promoting bonding and communication between you and your baby • Regulating your baby’s temperature. Think of it like a thermostat – neither too hot nor too cold. • Baby picks up your healthy skin flora to populate their own skin with good bacteria, which then helps to develop their gut microbiome • Helps to calm and settle baby
When should I bath my baby?
For the first few days after birth, it is recommended that you only do minimal cleansing of the face and bottom area. (top and tail). This encourages friendly skin flora which in turn helps to develop the baby’s gut. In the first few weeks, only bath with baby body wash when visibly dirty as this helps to protect skin flora and reduce drying their skin. After a bath, you can put baby in skin-to-skin with you or your partner for a few minutes to help re-establish baby’s healthy skin flora, then use the moisturiser on baby to help maintain skin hydration.
How do I top and tail my baby?
1. Fill a bowl with cold water first, then top up with warm water to body temperature; you can test with a thermometer if you are unsure. 2. Leave nappy on and wrap a towel around baby. 3. Use a wet cotton pad with no cleansing wash for each eye and sweep over the closed eye starting from near the nose. Then use a fresh wet cotton pad with a drop of cleansing wash and wipe around the face and clean around the ears and under the chin as these areas can collect milk dribbles. Pat dry with a towel. 4. Squeeze a small amount of cleansing wash on to wet hands or soft cloth. Check baby’s hands for strands of hair wrapped around fingers then wash. 5. If baby’s hair needs cleaning put a few drops of cleansing wash into the water, then using wet hands, or soft cloth gently sweep over the hair and then rinse off. Pat dry with a towel. 6. Remove the nappy and wash their bottom and genital area with a wet soft cloth with a few drops of cleansing wash and then rinse off.
