Your baby has a layer of sebum on their skin which protects their skin from dirt and bacteria. Baby dribble contains digestive enzymes which irritate the skin and break down this protective layer and can cause a rash. It also makes their clothing wet and leads to rubbing and chafing against their delicate skin. Dribbling will usually get worse when babies are teething as they will naturally produce more saliva during this time. Totally Immense Dribble Defence can be applied to your baby’s chin, cheeks, neck and skin creases to gently soothe, protect and nourish their skin from dribble rash and soreness.

The super charged skin salve targets and soothes dry, sore and inflamed skin and forms a protective barrier to prevent irritants coming into contact with the skin. Baby’s skin is delicate when newborn and in the first few months, their own microbiome supports natural skin development and therefore unless your baby has generally dry skin problem areas should be targeted rather than a blanket approach of moisturising where it is not needed. By targeting specific areas of skin which need support and extra moisture, it leaves the areas which are ok to develop naturally, supporting baby’s microbiome.

Most babies experience nappy rash at some point, if not regularly, which can mean soreness, redness and irritation so what else can you do to help? Our midwives recommend:

avoiding soaps and wipes (just wash with water or if really dirty use Mega Mild Cleansing Wash) limiting baths, as this can dry your baby’s skin out patting the area dry gently, using a soft towel, rather than rubbing changing each soiled nappy or liner without delay using slightly larger nappies for a few days, so there’s a bit of a gap to avoid chafing and so the skin can breathe as it heals letting your baby go nappy-free as much as possible until the nappy rash clears up

Most nappy creams can affect the absorbency of a cloth nappy, because they contain ingredients that can build up and then become difficult to wash out. No Harm Bum Balm is a smooth, fine serum, rather than a thick cream, which helps – as does the fact that lanolin isn’t very sticky, so you only need a thin layer. However, we recommend using nappy liners to protect your nappies.

Skin-to-skin contact is when your skin and your baby’s skin are in direct contact. Skin-to-skin contact benefits both you and your baby, not just following the birth, but for weeks and months afterwards by:

• Promoting bonding and communication between you and your baby • Regulating your baby’s temperature. Think of it like a thermostat – neither too hot nor too cold. • Baby picks up your healthy skin flora to populate their own skin with bacteria, which then helps to develop their gut microbiome • Helps to calm and settle baby

For the first few days after birth, it is recommended that you only do minimal cleansing of the face and bottom area(top and tail). This encourages development of skin flora and the microbiome which in turn helps to develop the baby’s gut microbiome. In the first few weeks, bath a maximum of 2-3 times per week or when visibly dirty as this helps to protect skin flora and reduce drying their skin. After a bath, you can put baby in skin-to-skin with you or your partner for a few minutes to help re-establish baby’s healthy skin flora, then use the moisturiser on baby to help maintain skin hydration.

1. Fill a bowl with cold water first, then top up with warm water to body temperature; you can test with a thermometer if you are unsure.
2. Leave nappy on and wrap a towel around baby.
3. Use a wet cotton pad with no cleansing wash for each eye and sweep over the closed eye starting from near the nose. Then use a fresh wet cotton pad with a drop of cleansing wash and wipe around the face and clean around the ears and under the chin as these areas can collect milk dribbles. Pat dry with a towel.
4. Squeeze a small amount of cleansing wash on to wet hands or soft cloth. Check baby’s hands for strands of hair wrapped around fingers then wash.
5. If baby’s hair needs cleaning put a few drops of cleansing wash into the water, then using wet hands, or soft cloth gently sweep over the hair and then rinse off. Pat dry with a towel.
6. Remove the nappy and wash their bottom and genital area with a wet soft cloth with a few drops of cleansing wash and then rinse off.

Any product which contains water must contain ingredients which make them safe and stable over time and in different temperature and light conditions. If these aren’t included bacteria could form. These are called preservatives. Only preservatives that undergo rigorous testing are considered safe for use in cosmetic products and currently none of these are natural. We have used the gentlest preservatives which are Ecocert approved.
