We know that folate (the natural form of folic acid) is essential in supporting the development of the brain, spine and neural tube in your unborn baby. We also know that having folate in its natural form is easier for your body to absorb. So, alongside a well-balanced diet that contains natural sources of folate, taking a supplement that contains folate is a great way to complement a healthy pre-conception and you and your baby’s nutritional needs during pregnancy.

INGREDIENTS: Nutrient-Enhanced Buckwheat (Nicotinamide, Vitamin B6, Thiamine, Riboflavin, Folic Acid, Iodine), Marine Algae Calcium, Acerola Cherry Extract, Capsule Shell (Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose), Zinc Sulphate Monohydrate, Carbonyl Iron, Vitashine™ Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol – Plant Sourced), Vitamin B12 (Methylcobalamin)
Contains 400ug of folic acid in the form of folate (as Calcium L-Methylfolate) from nutrient enhanced buckwheat as recommended by the UK Department for Health for all women trying to conceive and throughout pregnancy. Natural folate is more bioavailable and therefore can be easier for the body to absorb than synthetic folic acid.
Contains 10ug of Vitamin D as recommended by the UK Department for Health for all pregnant women.
Also includes Iron, Vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6, B12, C, Iodine, Zinc and Calcium for overall nutritional support from when you start trying for your baby and throughout your pregnancy.
Vitamin B12 is needed for making use of protein. It also helps the blood carry oxygen and is essential for making DNA. Vitamin B12 deficiency is linked to reduced fertility and issues with reproductive health.
Vitamin B6 is needed for healthy skin, nerves, and the formation of antibodies and blood cells. It also helps maintain hormonal balance between oestrogen and progesterone, which is critical for female fertility and a healthy reproductive system.
Thiamine (B1) has been linked to egg cell health. A deficiency in Vitamin B1 has been linked to higher rates of infertility and miscarriage. It also plays an important role in the health of the brain, nerves, spinal cord, and enzymes. Body stores are relatively small, so regular intakes are vital.
A lack of riboflavin (B2) in the body reduces energy levels. It is required to make skin, hair and nails. Research indicates that riboflavin, used in conjunction with iron, improves anaemia.
There is a requirement for niacin (B3) in pregnancy Niacin is involved in the normal growth of skin, the formation of healthy nerves, and maintaining a good digestive system.
Women who are planning to get pregnant or are pregnant have a higher requirement of iodine.
As midwives we always recommend that women trying to become pregnant and throughout their pregnancy aim for the best diet to attain her nutritional requirements, we also know that this is not always possible so taking a supplement can reassure you that you are getting all the nutrition you need.
If you did not take a supplement before you conceived, you should start as soon as you find out you are pregnant. The right supplement can increase your chances of becoming pregnant, support your nutritional needs and your immune system during pregnancy and help you to grow a healthier baby. Taking a supplement will also make you less likely to succumb to illness and can also help with fatigue.
The UK Department of Health recommend supplementing folic acid to reduce risks of problems in the baby’s development in the early weeks of pregnancy. Folic acid can prevent birth defects known as neural tube defects including spina bifida.
Vitamin D regulates the amount of calcium and phosphate in the body, which are needed to keep bones, teeth, and muscles healthy. The Department of Health recommend that all people consider taking 10 micrograms of Vitamin D between September and March when we are not exposed to summer sunlight which makes vitamin D. Vitamin D is only found in a small number of foods, so it is difficult to get enough from your diet.
Folate is the natural form of vitamin B9, while folic acid is a synthetic form.
Natural folate is more bioavailable than synthetic Folic Acid. This is especially important for the estimated 20%-60% of the population who have a variation in one of their MTHFR genes that negatively impacts their ability to convert folic acid (the synthetic version of B9), into the active form of folate. The folic acid in Pre-Conception + Pregnancy Women is natural folate, (as Calcium L-Methylfolate) from nutrient enhanced buckwheat.
As a general rule, Pre-Conception & Pregnancy Women can be taken alongside medications because it contains only moderate levels of vitamins and minerals. However, if you are already taking prescribed supplements or medications, seek advice from your doctor, midwife, or health professional first.
NRV levels are calculated to help prevent the most basic vitamin and mineral deficiency states. The levels contained in Pre-Conception & Pregnancy Women are specific to normal requirements in pregnancy. This is why Folic Acid, Vitamin D and Zinc are higher than the NRV but all other vitamins and minerals are included at 100% of NRV. Unlike other supplements we don’t include anything at a higher level than is needed. All levels are safe for pregnancy and well within upper safety guidelines for daily self-supplementation.
Yes, it is safe, and we recommend that you supplement your intake of folate from when you decide to conceive and throughout your pregnancy. Folate (or its synthetic form, folic acid) is vital during the early period of pregnancy for the normal healthy development of your baby’s neural tube, but it also contributes to maternal tissue growth during pregnancy, normal blood formation, the normal function of the immune system, a reduction in tiredness and fatigue, and has a role in the process of cell division.
We recommend a regular, daily intake but if you have missed a day or two this won’t do any harm. Just take it again when you remember and as directed. You should not take more than the recommended amount to make up for any days you have missed.
60 capsules / 1 months’ supply

Plant based refers to an ingredient which is 100% plant material, for example, acerola cherry which is a natural source of Vitamin C. The Vitamin B12 we use, on the other hand, is fermented so, whilst it is natural, it is not plant based.
